Somerset is predominantly an agricultural area with a diverse countryside of unspoilt and well-wooded scenery. The towns are interesting; the villages and hamlets, built mostly of local stone, are attractive; the many manor houses date from Tudor and Georgian times; many of the churches are of architectural merit and have the handsome towers for which Somerset is famous.
