The Lake District is home to some of the most spectacular scenery in England. Designated as a National Park in 1951 to promote the area's outstanding beauty and to promote enjoyment of it, the Lake District National Park is one of the largest at 880 square miles. Home to England's longest lake, Windermere, 10 ½ miles long, the deepest lake Wastwater, with a depth up to 258 feet, the steepest road (Hardknott Pass with an overall gradient of 1 in 3 (33%) and up to 1 in 2.5 in places and tallest mountain Scafell Pike 977m (3210 feet) and home of the World's Biggest Liar.

The English Lake District has some of the most spectacular scenery and offers no shortage of things to do. Activities range from walking, cycling, sailing, climbing waterskiing, to Hot Air Ballooning to name a few. In addition to this there are an array of attractions to visit including historic houses and gardens, castles and leisurely lake cruises, homes of famous literary figures such as Beatrix Potter's Hilltop, John Ruskin's Brantwood on Coniston Water which was home of the art critic, writer and philosopher, and of course William Wordsworth's homes can all be visited: Wordsworth House, Dove Cottage and Rydal Mount.
