The fortress in which is set the pousada is a Gothic and Baroque military building. The first walls of this fortress were built during the 13th century.
This Vauban style structure stands on two hills and is composed of two polygons separated by a ditch. One of the polygon named Coroada is made of ten towers and two half towers while the Magistral Square is made of seven towers. The two structures are separated by two doors and a fixed bridge.
