Setubal is located on the wide estuary of the Rio Sado. This city is one of Portugal's main ports.
The Celtic settlement of Cetobriga used to stand in the place in which Setubal is located today. Cetobriga was destroyed by a tidal wave and was replaced by a Roman town in the 5th century. Setubal was partially destroyed by an earthquake in 1755.
Setubal used to be a royal residence in the 15th century. This charming city is also the birthplace of the 18th century poet Manuel Maria de Barbosa du Bocage.
Setubal boats an inviting waterfront with a fishing harbour and a marina. In the picturesque old town, visitors will find interesting sights such as Praca do Bocage housing the statue of the poet.
