| Heritage Av Liberdade Hotel is located on the corner of cosmopolitan Avenida da Liberdade and Largo da Anunciada, offering a calm and intimate atmosphere, next to the Lavra funicular that transports visitors to the top of one of the most beautiful hills in Lisbon. In the seventeenth century, the Largo da Anunciada housed a monastery of Dominican friars and the Ericeiras Palace, which were both destroyed in the 1755 earthquake. The fire that raged within the palace consumed one of the largest libraries in Lisbon and also a highly valuable art collection that included paintings by Rubens, Corregio and Titian. The Ericeiras were one of the most illustrious families in Portugal. A major portion of the land where the Public Promenade (now known as the Avenida da Liberdade) was opened in 1764, belonged to the Ericeiras family, as did the site of the hotel itself, whose building was erected in around 1770. The discreet, yet erudite architectural style of the Heritage Av Liberdade Hotel has a strong link to the history of the square, convent and Ericeiras palace. The building was initially constituted by a ground floor, mezzanine, noble floor and garret, but a further two floors and attic were added in 1897. The building has gained a fresh lease of life due to the renovation project by Portuguese architect, Miguel Câncio Martins. The restoration maintains all the elements of the eighteenth century façade, masonry work, veranda railings and main wooden entrance door. The Pombaline azulejo tiles inside the building have been restored, together with the wooden shutters with their original iron-fittings and several items of furniture that pertained to former tenants, in particular a group of herbalists that lived here from the eighteenth century onwards and whose tradition is maintained in the square. Câncio Martins is internationally famous for his interventions in spaces such as Thiou and the Buddha Bar in Paris, Strictly Hush in London and Man Ray in New York and his distinctive trademark is evident in the ample and cosmopolitan space of the hotel lobby. Offering a bridge between modernity and the past, and with views over the Avenida da Liberdade, Largo da Anunciada and Torel Hill, the Heritage Av Liberdade Hotel, as with all Heritage brand hotels, is an unforgettable locale that enriches the city's heritage.
