Portalegre is located close to the Spanish border. It has a strong religious background which is evident by the number of churches and monasteries dating from the 13th century. The town museum has on show a collection of sacred art. Portalegre lies on the side of Serra de Sao Mamede, a mountainous range with a great variety of fauna and flora.
