HISTORY

The Commodore Hotel was built in 1854, consisting of fifty sitting and sleeping arrangements, two coffee rooms, a billiards room and fresh and salt water baths. The hotel is recorded to be one of the first purpose built hotel's in Ireland.

The first record of an event in the Commodore Hotel was in the Cork Examiner on May 25th 1855, after a function in honour of the Queens Viceroy in Ireland. The Lord Lieutenant-General, Lord Carlisle, whom which Fort Carlisle is named after.

The hotel ownership changed hands in 1874 and was taken over by Mr. Raymond. However the most noted owner of the hotel was Otto Humbert who owned the hotel during the time of the Lusitania sinking. The family had taken over the hotel and focused on attracting the liner traffic that passed through the harbour

However in 1914 war broke out and the anti- German feelings did not help the Humbert's business. The sinking of the Lusitania forced the Humbert family to hideout in the wine cellar as an angry crowd gathered in Westbourne Place calling for the hotel to be burnt down.

During the time of the Lusitania the hotel was converted into a hospital and commandeered by a lady holidaying in Queenstown at the time. She was an English lady whose husband was involved in fighting in the wars in India. The hotel has a copy of the letter she wrote to her beloved husband detailing exactly what she did at the time.

The O' Shea family acquired the hotel in 1968 and conducted extensive renovation's before it reopened as a hotel.
Please note our Swimming Pool is closed for the winter months effe
