| About Casa Velha do Palheiro |
It was in 1804 that work started to create a hunting lodge for João, 1st Count of Carvalhal. Trees from the southern hemisphere were planted in the gardens and deer roamed the estate. Casa Velha played host to royalty and nobility. In 1885, long after the 1st Count's death, the Quinta do palheiro was acquired by john Burden Blandy and his descendants continue to live on the estate today. Some hundred years later, the complex project began to rebuild and restore the house to its former glory, with modern infrastructures and luxury finishes. Casa Velha do Palheiro proudly received its first guests as a country house hotel in May 1997, continuing a long, noble tradition of hospitality at the highest level. We take great pride in our cuisine, For lunch, may we suggest the Clubhouse restaurant at Palheiro Golf, which we manage, and which has magnificent views over Funchal. For dinner, our own restaurant offers both table d'hote and à la carte menus, with Portuguese and international dishes prepared to perfection by our award-winning gourmet chef. If the old stones of Casa Velha do Palheiro would share their stories, if the ancient trees would whisper their secrets, they would tell of hunting parties around the grounds; of lavish parties in the house. The rich history of the house and its renowned hospitality make the memories which form the foundation of our philosophy today. Enjoy the Casa Velha experience...a place of history, beauty and elegance!
